Down in San Diego Comic-Con is humming away, and by all accounts Marvel is killing it. The Powers that Be have taken the task or organizing and coordinating the sprawling Marvel platform-spanning meta-franchise and have succeeded beyond anyone’s expectations, and (perhaps just as importantly) they have raised generating buzz to an art form. The chatter around Guardians of the Galaxy is deafening, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off Agent Carter is already pulling in first rate talent, and AoS itself just announced the addition of the divine Lucy Lawless to the cast (thus insuring an eternity in the hearts and imaginations of nerds everywhere), and Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to assume the mantle of Marvel’s resident magician—Dr. Strange. (The only member of the Marvel franchise that seems to be floundering is Ant Man, and you can’t win ‘em all. Besides, Hank Pym occupies a very particular role within the Marvel Universe, and I don’t think anyone is really excited about it besides me, so I think over-all it is benefiting from low expectations.) The buzz-orchestra comes to a crescendo today with the doubtlessly Hall H-packing, Avengers 2: Age of Ultron-focused panel this evening at 5:30 p.m.
